2-1Standing on the shoulders of giants....(I.Newton)
Dear ISCA members,

While many of you have already heard, we are sorry to announce the
passing of Fred Jelinek. Fred was a giant in the speech and language
area. He pioneered and tirelessly promoted the application of
statistical methods to speech and language processing. When he first
began in the early 1970s, the concept was extremely controversial;
today this approach is taken for granted. Fred received numerous
awards in his long, distinguished career, included being named an
ISCA Medalist in 1999 and an ISCA Fellow in 2008. Fred had been the
long-term director of the Johns Hopkins University Center for
Language and Speech Processing (CLSP) and the Julian Sinclair Smith
Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. A more detailed
description of his life and work, as well as information for those
interested in making contributions in his memory can be found on the
CLSP website (http://clsp.jhu.edu/
). He will be greatly missed but his legacy to us will continue.

2-2Annual assembly: a message from David House, ISCA Secretary

Dear ISCA members,

On behalf of the ISCA Board, I would like to encourage you to attend
the ISCA General Assembly which will take place in Makuhari, Japan in
conjunction with INTERSPEECH 2010. The Assembly will begin at 18.15
(6.15 pm) on Tuesday, September 28 and will be held in Hall A/B at
the International Conference Hall. The General Assembly is open to
all members of ISCA and provides an excellent opportunity for you to
actively participate in the meeting and propose suggestions to help
make our association even better.

I would particularly like to draw your attention to item 5 on the
agenda. This item concerns proposed changes to the ISCA Statutes A4.1
and A5.1.

Statute A4.1 restricts ISCA Board membership to no more than two
members per country. Possible changes to this restriction were
discussed at the General Assembly held last year in Brighton, and now
the Board is officially proposing increasing the limit to three
members per country:

Current: ?No more than two members of the Board are permitted from
one country.?

Proposed: ?No more than three members of the Board are permitted
from one country.?

Statute A5.1 specifies the frequency of General Assembly meetings to
once every two years. In practice, the General Assembly now meets at
each Interspeech Conference and therefore the Board proposes the
following change:

Current: ?The General Assembly meets every two years.?

Proposed: ?The General Assembly meets at least every two years.?

On behalf of the ISCA Board, I am looking forward to seeing you in
Makuhari and to your participation in the ISCA General Assembly.

Best regards,

David House

ISCA Secretary

2-5ISCA student advisory committee (ISCA-SAC) seeks student volunteers.

'ISCA Student Advisory Committee (ISCA-SAC) is seeking student volunteers to
help with several interesting projects such as reporting on ISCA related events
and cutting edge research, plan/organize student events at ISCA-sponsored
conferences/workshops, increase awareness of speech and language research to
undergraduate and junior graduate students.

At the moment, we are particularly looking for someone to help keep our web
resources up to date, e.g. keeping track of upcoming conferences and other
events, or general help with web programming.  However, there are many other
small tasks to be done, each of which would only take up a few hours.  If you
are interested, please contact the ISCA-SAC Volunteer Coordinator at: vo lun te
er [at] isca-students [dot] org.  You can also find more details on our
website: http://www.isca-students.org/blog/involved.'
