6-5 (2014-08-18) Two postdoc positions in speech processing at the Department of Signal Processing and Acoustics, Aalto University, Finland.

Department of Signal Processing and Acoustics, Aalto University (formerly known as the Helsinki University of Technology), is looking for outstanding candidates for two postdoc positions:

Postdoc position in Computational Modeling of Language Acquisition

The speech technology group (led by Prof. Unto Laine) at Aalto University works on computational modeling of language acquisition, perception and production. The overall goal is to understand how spoken language skills can be acquired by humans or machines through communicative interaction and without supervision. The research in our topic involves cross-disciplinary effort across fields such as machine learning, signal processing, speech processing, linguistics, and cognitive science. The research is funded by the Academy of Finland.

We are currently looking for a postdoc to join our research team to work on our research themes, including:

  • pattern discovery from speech

  • articulatory modeling and inversion

  • modeling and methods for autonomous acquisition of lexical, phonetic and grammatical structure from speech input

  • multimodal statistical learning (associative learning between multiple input domains such as speech, articulation and vision).

Postdoc: 2 years. Starting date: as soon as possible.

Postdoc position in Speech Synthesis and Voice Source Analysis

The speech communication technology research group (led by Prof. Paavo Alku) at Aalto University works on interdisciplinary topics aiming at describing, explaining and reproducing communication by speech. The main topics of our research are: analysis and parameterization of speech production, statistical parametric speech synthesis, enhancement of speech quality and intelligibility in mobile phones, robust feature extraction in speech and speaker recognition, occupational voice care and brain functions in speech perception.

We are currently looking for a postdoc to join our research team to work on the team’s research themes, particularly in the following topics:

  • statistical speech synthesis

  • voice source analysis

  • speech intelligibility improvement

Postdoc: 1-3 years. Starting date: January 2015

Send your application, CV and references directly by email to

Prof. Paavo Alku, paavo.alku at aalto.fi

All positions require a relevant doctoral degree in CS or EE, skills for doing excellent research in a group, and outstanding research experience in any of the research themes mentioned above. The candidate is expected to perform high-quality research and assist in supervising PhD students. Please send your application email with the subject line “Aalto post-doc recruitment, autumn 2014”.

In Helsinki you will join the innovative international computational data analysis and ICT community. Among European cities, Helsinki is special in being clean, safe, liberal, Scandinavian, and close to nature, in short, having a high standard of living. English is spoken everywhere.
