6-5 | (2013-10-10) PhD-position at CITEC, Bielefeld University, Germany PhD-position at CITEC, Bielefeld University, Germany ====================================================
TOPIC: Embodied cognitive modeling of language processing and dialogue ---------------------------------------------------------------------- We are seeking highly qualified candidates who want to participate as a PhD student researcher in a larger scale project at Bielefeld University's Center of Excellence on Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC) [1,2]. The project aims to investigate how a robot can familiarize itself with novel objects and actions through exploratory manual interaction in its environment under guidance of a human tutor. The goal is to develop deep representations of objects and actions, using language to engage in dialogue with the tutor to guide the ongoing interaction and familiarization process. Language processing and dialogue shall thereby be grounded in embodied cognitive processes. In particular, we are searching for a PhD student working on the language aspects of this project. The task is to build a cognitively motivated representation system which interconnects different levels of abstraction and is grounded in the (already present) lower-level sensorimotor capabilities of the robot. The researcher will have to develop an intermediate type of conceptual representation which should be based on or is connected to schema theories and should in particular focus on dynamic representation of action. The targeted outcome is an implemented formalism for action semantics that links up lower-levels of sensorimotor processing with linguistic processing of syntax and semantics, as e.g. provided by construction grammar based approaches. A second goal is to build dialogue strategies on top of this formalism, e.g. to enable clarification questions geared to reduce uncertainty in this mental simulation. The successful candidate has a background in Cognitive Science/A.I. and Linguistics, and is in particular familiar with, or motivated to learn about a deep understanding of cognition within holistic approaches to complex embodied cognitive systems. Knowledge on cognitive linguistic formalism and schema theory will be helpful. Overview -------- The successful candidate is expected to have a strong background in at least two of the following areas: * Cognitive Science * Computational Linguistics * Mental Representation * Cognitive Robotics Candidates with expertise in several topics will be given preference. Applicants are expected to have strong programming skills, the ability to work independently, strong interpersonal skills as well as strong English language skills. Candidates should be qualified for and willing to perform state-of-the-art research. Knowledge of German is not required. The project will provide the chance to perform cutting-edge research in an international context. The PhD applicant will be primarily associated with two research groups participating in this project: The Sociable Agents Group [3] (Prof. Dr. Stefan Kopp) developing cognitive systems capable of multimodal communication and social interaction, and the Emergentist Semantics Group [4] (PD Dr. Katharina Rohlfing) investigating the emergence of meaning in children and learning systems. Within these groups, the applicant will receive supervision and support in developing the necessary skills to produce high-quality research necessary to earn a PhD Degree. The salary for the position is around 3.300 Euro per month (pre taxes), according to scale TV-L E 13 in the German University System and can vary depending on age, marital status, tax class, etc. [5]. The salary increases with the duration of the employment. The position is available for two years and can be prolonged for one more year. Candidates are expected to start on January 1st, 2014. Applications from suitably qualified handicapped and severely handicapped persons are expressly encouraged. Bielefeld University has received a number of awards for its achievements in the provision of equal opportunity and has been recognised as a family friendly university. The University welcomes applications from women. This is particularly true with regard both to academic and technical posts as well as positions in Information Technology and trades and crafts. Applications are handled according to the provisions of the state equal opportunity statutes. Applications are invited until 31.10.2013 and will be processed as they are received. Interviews will be scheduled via Skype in the first half of November. Applicants will be informed of the outcome of the selection in the second half of November. Applications should be sent by email to Prof. Stefan Kopp Sociable Agents Group, Faculty of Technology Email: stefan.kopp@uni-bielefeld.de preferably as *one* PDF document including a CV, motivation letter, publication record (if applicable), record of teaching activities (if applicable) and any other relevant information in addition to the names of two referees. Or by mail to the following address: Bielefeld University, CITEC Inspiration 1 33619 Bielefeld Germany The application should highlight the expertise in the areas mentioned above and express the research interests of the applicant. Location -------- Bielefeld is one of the 20 largest cities in Germany (with close to 330.000 inhabitants) [6]. It is a lively city with a lot of cultural and entertainment opportunities. It is located in the heart of the Teutoburg Forest [7], offering many opportunities for outdoor and leisure activities. 6-8 | (2013-10-16) Part-time Position (E13, 50%) in the field of “Adaptive Speech Synthesis”, Bielefeld University, Germany Part-time Position (E13, 50%) in the field of “Adaptive Speech Synthesis”, Bielefeld University, Germany The Excellence Cluster Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC) [1] at Bielefeld University [2], Germany offers an open part-time (PhD) position in the field of 'Adaptive Speech Synthesis”. The position (TV-L E13, 50%) is part of the interdisciplinary large scale project “Cognitive Service Robotics Apartment as Ambient Host” funded by CITEC. Cognitive interaction technology such as social robots or ambient intelligent environments have still not achieved socially smooth interaction skills that allow them to seamlessly blend in to our everyday lives consisting of a large variety of social situations. To achieve such skills for our intelligent robotic apartment an interdisciplinary team of roboticists, linguists and psychologists is working together.
One research focus lies investigates the interaction of psychological, linguistic and situational factors influencing human perception, interpretation and behavior. Here, our research pertains to questions relating to social categories, linguistic style and adaptive behavior. In our second research strand on social awareness we investigate how to determine classes of situations that are relevant for behavior adaptation. Methods for automatically recognizing such situations from large-scale sensoric input will be developed. Verbal and non-verbal interaction capabilities are investigated and modeled in the third research dimension enabling interaction with ambient interfaces and combining multi-modal dialogue with physical interaction. Finally, to achieve 24/7 operation we address issues of software architecture and extend existing system engineering approaches to our research environment. We further focus on questions of data management to deal with the large amounts of data and their efficient storage for further research. The overall approach builds on a highly dynamic process of evaluation and implementation, thus requiring excellent team qualities from all researchers. Work in the open position will concentrate on the further development of a speech synthesizer as part of an incremental dialogue system and its integration into a cognitive robotic apartment. The speech synthesis will be able to adapt its voice and speaking style according to situational needs (background noise, interaction role), across different embodiments (as robot, as part of the ambient interaction components of the apartment) and interaction partner (guest, familiar person). The various situations lend to a set of interaction primitives along with the necessary stylistic adaptations that need to be empirically investigated and defined. As the apartment will be equipped with a variety of verbal and non-verbal interaction capabilities, an optimal interaction strategy needs to be determined based on the situational needs. The adaptive speech synthesis will be evaluated throughout its development as part of the project. QUALIFICATIONS The successful candidate is expected to have a strong background in:
Candidates with expertise in several of the topics mentioned above will be given preference. Applicants are expected to have strong programming skills, the ability to work independently but as part of a larger team, to be open for interdisciplinary collaboration and to have strong English language skills. Knowledge of German is not required. The position is embedded in the Work Group Phonetics and Phonology within the Faculty of Linguistics and Literature. The group’s research focus lies in multimodal interaction, discourse prosody, rhythm and prosodic prominence in natural and synthetic speech. An overview of the ongoing workgroup projects and publications can be found here: [5]. Postdoc applicants will have the chance to perform independent research on the topics of the group that qualifies them for an academic career and allows them to position themselves as independent researchers in the community. PhD applicants will receive extended supervision and support through the collaboration with the project partners at CITEC, in particular Prof. Dr. Petra Wagner. The salary is according to scale TV-L E 13 (50%) in the German University System and can vary depending on age, marital status, tax class etc. The salary increases with the duration of the employment. An online tool to calculate the post-tax income can be found at [3] (indicating E 13, 50%). The objective is to offer feedback that relies on phonetic knowledge incorporated in the learning system and interacts relevantly with automatic speech recognition (ASR) and signal processing. This means that confidence in the results returned by ASR will be taken into account to derive diagnoses and feedback: the higher the confidence the more explicit the level of feedback. A corpus of German recorded by French learners and a second of French recorded by German learners will be exploited to determine errors on the one hand, and to develop algorithms involved in feedback on the other hand.

6-23 | (2014-11-03) CfP ACM Multimedia 2014 - Area on Music, Speech, and Audio Processing in Multimedia, Orlando, Florida, USACall for short and long paper contributions for ACM Multimedia 2014 - Area on Music, Speech, and Audio Processing in Multimedia November 3-7, 2014 Orlando, Florida, USA (For general information and information on other areas check http://www.acmmm.org/2014/) As a core part of multimedia data, the acoustic modality is of great importance as a source of information that is orthogonal to other modalities like video or text. This allows for richer information to be extracted when performing content analysis, as well as a rich mean of communication of information. We are seeking strong technical submissions revolving around music, speech and audio processing in multimedia. One topic of interest is submissions performing an analysis of the acoustic signals in order to extract information from multimedia content (e.g. what notes are being played, what is being said, or what sounds appear), or the context (e.g. language spoken, age and gender of the speaker, localization using sound). Another topic of interest is submissions performing synthesis of acoustic content for multimedia purposes (e.g. speech synthesis, singing voices, acoustic scene synthesis). Furthermore, we are also interested in ways to represent acoustic data as multimedia; for example, in symbolic form (e.g. closed captioning of speech), in the form of sensor input and visual images (e.g. recordings of gestures in musical performances). or others. Another topic of interest is applications that involve the acoustic modality. The inclusion of acoustics opens up interesting possibilities for novel multimedia interfaces and user interactions. In addition, contextual, social and affective aspects play an important role when using acoustics, which can be seen, for example, in the consumption and enjoyment of music, and the sound design of cinematic productions. All submissions should maintain a clear relation to multimedia: there either should be an explicit relation to multimedia items, applications or systems, or an application of a multimedia perspective, in which information sources from different modalities are considered. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: · Multimedia audio analysis and synthesis · Multimedia audio indexing, search, and retrieval · Music, speech, and audio annotation, similarity measures, and evaluation · Multimodal and multimedia approaches to music, speech, and audio · Multimodal and multimedia context models for music, speech, and audio · Computational approaches to music, speech, and audio inspired by other domains (e.g. computer vision, information retrieval, musicology, psychology) · Multimedia localization using acoustic information · Social data, user models and personalization in music, speech, and audio · Music, audio, and aural aspects in multimedia user interfaces · Algorithms and applications of music, speech, and audio · New and interactive musical instruments, systems and other music, speech, and audio applications · Novel interaction interfaces using/with music, speech, and audio · Music, speech, and audio coding, transmission, and storage for multimedia applications Deadlines for long papers is March 31st, 2014 and for short papers is April 14th, 2014 For other deadlines please check http://www.acmmm.org/2014/important_dates.html

6-29 | (2014-03-04) Postdoctoral fellow in the area of phonetics, Max Planck Institute, Leipzig, Germany Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Leipzig, Germany
Announcement of Vacancy
The Department of Linguistics at the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig has a vacancy for a postdoctoral fellow in the area of phonetics.
In order to understand the abstract structure underlying the movements of articulators involved in speech sound production, the department’s phonetics lab is developing methods aimed at detecting the coupling relations between the dynamical systems involved. This work is based on a variant of joint recurrence analysis which is compatible with the uncontrolled manifold theory of synergies in intentional dynamics. The methods will be applied to explore the abstract coupling links underlying the coordination between the behavior of the larynx and the behavior of oral articulators.
The successful candidate will be involved in the conceptual design and in the development of analytical tools. This includes the areas of joint recurrence analysis, recurrence network approaches, and procedures for building surrogate databases for testing the significance of the observed relations.
The one-year non-renewable position ends no later than May 31, 2015.
Prerequisites for an application are a PhD and knowledge of dynamical systems theory as well as of information theory (as shown by relevant publications or by his/her academic curriculum), with an interest in their application to real datasets. Programming skills (preferably Matlab or C++) are required. Knowledge of recurrence analysis methods and of Bayesian statistics is welcome.
The salary is according to the German public service pay scale (TVöD). The Max Planck Society is concerned to employ more disabled people; applications from disabled people are explicitly sought. The Max Planck Society wishes to increase the proportion of women in areas in which they are underrepresented; women are therefore explicitly encouraged to apply.
Applicants are requested to send their complete dossier (including curriculum vitae, description of research interests, names and contact details of two referees, and a piece of written work on one of the relevant topics) to:

Post-doctoral Fellow - INRIA - Nancy, France
The goal of this work is to develop an accurate 3D lip model that can be integrated within a talking head. A control model will also be developed. The lip model should be as accurate dynamically as possible. When designing this model, the focus will be on the dynamics. For this reason, one can start from a static 3D lip mesh, using a generic 3D lip model, and then we will use MRI images or 3D scans to obtain more realistic shape of the lips. To take into account the dynamic aspect of the lip deformation, we will use an articulograph (EMA) and motion capture technique to track sensors or markers on the lips. The mesh will be adapted to this data.
To control the lips, we will consider allowing a skeletal animation to be controlled by the EMA sensors or motion capture markers, using inverse kinematic technique, widely used in 3D modeling. In line with conventional skeletal animation, an articulated armature rigged inside the mesh is mapped to vertex groups on the lip mesh by a weight map that can be defined automatically from the envelope of the armature’s shape and manually adjusted if required, where manipulating the armature’s components deforms the surrounding mesh accordingly.
The main challenge is to find the best topology of the sensors or markers on the lips, to be able to better capture accurately its dynamics. The main outcome is to accurately model and animate the lips based on articulatory data. It is very important to have readable lips in that can be lip-read by hard-of-hearing people.

Title: Emotion modeling during expressive audiovisual speech
The goal of this thesis is to study the expressivity from articulatory and visual points of view. The articulatory and facial gestures will be characterized for the different sounds of speech (called phonemes) in the different expressive contexts. The goal is to determine how facial expressions interact with speech gesture (lips, tongue, face and acoustics), and how this is embedded within the phoneme articulation and their acoustic consequences. The quantification of the intensity of an expression during a given phoneme (or sequence of phonemes) articulation needs to be determined. One important objective of this work is to develop an expressive control model, which describes the interaction of the facial expressions with audiovisual speech.
To achieve these goals, two corpora will be acquired using electromagnetography (EMA) and motion capture techniques synchronously with acoustics. The EMA is the technique that uses electromagnetic sensors, glued on the tongue, teeth, lips and eventually the face, that represent 3D positions, and two angle orientations. We will use a marker-less motion capture that allows retrieving the dynamics of the face due to speech and expressivity. The corpora will cover sentences pronounced in several emotional contexts. These corpora provide the articulatory trajectories of the tongue and the lips in addition to the acoustic signal. The acquired data will be processed and analyzed, and the control model will be developed based on the results of this analysis.

6-32 | (2014-03-07) Post-doc position at LORIA (Nancy, France) Post-doc position at LORIA (Nancy, France) Framework of ANR project ContNomina The technologies involved in information retrieval in large audio/video databases are often based on the analysis of large, but closed, corpora, and on machine learning techniques and statistical modeling of the written and spoken language. The effectiveness of these approaches is now widely acknowledged, but they nevertheless have major flaws, particularly for what concern proper names, that are crucial for the interpretation of the content. In the context of diachronic data (data which change over time) new proper names appear constantly requiring dynamic updates of the lexicons and language models used by the speech recognition system. As a result, the ANR project ContNomina (2013-2017) focuses on the problem of proper names in automatic audio processing systems by exploiting in the most efficient way the context of the processed documents. To do this, the postdoc student will address the contextualization of the recognition module through the dynamic adjustment of the language model in order to make it more accurate. Post-doc subject The language model of the recognition system (n gram learned from a large corpus of text) is available. The problem is to estimate the probability of a new proper name depending on its context. Several tracks will be explored: adapting the language model, using a class model or studying the notion of analogy. Our team has developed a fully automatic system for speech recognition to transcribe a radio broadcast from the corresponding audio file. The postdoc will develop a new module whose function is to integrate new proper names in the language model. Required skills A PhD in NLP (Natural Language Processing), be familiar with the tools for automatic speech recognition, background in statistics and computer program skills (C and Perl). 6-35 | (2014-03-08) PhD position in spoken dialogue systems research, Charles University, Prague, CZ PhD position in spoken dialogue systems research
Applications are invited for a PhD fellowship in the area of statistical spoken dialogue systems funded by the Czech Government. The student will join the Institute of Formal and Applied Linguistics, Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic with an anticipated start date of October 1st, 2014.
Topic description: In recent years, it has been suggested that statistical approach to spoken dialogue system offer a framework to naturally handle inherent uncertainty in the human speech. The two main advantages of statistical methods are increased robustness in noisy conditions and more natural behaviour learnt from data. However, the current methods need large corpora effectively preventing these methods to be used for complex dialogue systems occurring in real-life. The successful PhD candidate will investigate and implement statistical models and methods with the aim of increasing the efficiency of the learning process and reducing the need for large corpora. The conducted research will cover areas of spoken language understanding, dialogue management, and natural language processing.
Skills: The candidate should hold a master degree in a relevant area, such as computer science, mathematics, engineering or linguistics. A strong mathematical background, excellent programming skills (e.g. C/C++, Java, MATLAB, and various scripting languages under Linux environment), aptitude for creative research and autonomy are expected. Experience in machine learning, Bayesian methods, and natural language processing is a plus.
The Institute of Formal and Applied Linguistics is a top-level research group working in the area of computational linguistics and natural language processing. During the fellowship, there will be good opportunities to attend international conferences and workshops. The formal applications should be submitted before June 1. Prospective candidates are strongly encouraged to contact Dr Filip Jurcicek (jurcicek@ufal.mff.cuni.cz) as soon as possible to obtain details about the application process, the institute, and the research opportunities.
