Rhythm and its functions in speech perception and production

Résumé
Speech rhythm is one of the major areas in prosody research which is still controversially discussed. Is the nature of speech rhythm best captured by its temporal structure, as a succession of events with specific timing? Or should we first consider the relationships between events of varying prominence that shape the rhythmic contour of an utterance? Or should we start the investigation of rhythm from a functional perspective, addressing the issues of speech segmentation, lexical learning, and speaker coordination and identification? This thematic seminar is an attempt to review different approaches and methods and to discuss how to measure rhythm and its functions in speech perception and production. Rich data from corpus-based, behavioural and neuro-experimental research will be presented. Various topics will be addressed such as rhythm as a tool for cross-linguistic typology, the modeling of the French accent system, and rhythmic processes during first and second language acquisition.

Programme

  1. Rhythm and timing crosslinguistically, Amalia Arvaniti
  2. Prominence and rhythm in French – production, perception and neuroimaging data on different speaking genres, Corine Astésano
  3. How does rhythm influence L1/L2 acquisition?, Rossana Cavone & Simone Falk
