2-1 | President's message
Dear ISCA Members,
INTERSPEECH 2012 will be the latest international conference in the annual series of INTERSPEECH events sponsored
by ISCA (International Speech Communication Association). The conference will be held in Portland, Oregon, US,
September 10-14, 2012. The INTERSPEECH meetings are considered to be the top international conferences in
spoken language processing, with more than 1000 attendees from universities, industry, and government agencies.
The conference offers the prospect of meeting future leaders in the speech and language field, exchanging ideas,
and exploring opportunities for collaboration, employment, and sales through keynote talks, tutorials, technical sessions,
exhibits, and poster sessions. In recent years INTERSPEECH meetings have occurred in Pittsburgh, Lisbon, Korea, Geneva,
Denver, Denmark, Beijing, Belgium, Australia, England, Japan, and Italy. At this year's conference, we will be awarding
the 2012 ISCA Medal as well as announcing several new ISCA Fellows. In the next few years, the meetings will be held in
France, Singapore, and Germany. Best regards
p.o. Douglas 'O Shaughnessy,
ISCA Vice President

2-3 | An ISCA Sig on robust speech?
Following the recent surge of interest for robust speech processing algorithms and devices both in the academia and in the industry, we are proposing to create an ISCA special interest group (SIG) on robust speech processing.
What about? - robustness to noise, reverberation, inter- and intra-speaker variability, speaking style... - application to speech enhancement, ASR, speaker recognition...
What for? - facilitate communication between us, - share problems, resources and good practices, - promote our area within the larger communities involved (speech, audio, machine learning) and the industry, - support initiatives (special sessions, workshops, challenges, etc), - ultimately increase funding and foster new research directions.
Before submitting a formal proposal to ISCA, we would like to collect feedback from the community about the various possible choices and directions and gather a list of interested colleagues.
If you are interested, we invite you to come and meet us during Interspeech on Monday September 10 at 18:15 in the Pavilion East room on the Plaza Level at the Hilton. If you cannot attend this meeting, just email us to be counted in.
Best regards,
Ramón Fernandez Astudillo - L2F INESC-ID Lisboa, Portugal Emmanuel Vincent - INRIA, France
