2-1President's message

Dear ISCA Members,

I am taking advantage of this ISCApad issue to highlight three recent ISCA board activities.

I am very happy to announce the medalist for the 'ISCA Medal for Scientific Achievement 2012': Professor Chin-Hui Lee, for 'pioneering and seminal contributions to automatic speech and speaker recognition, including innovations in adaptive learning, discriminative training, and utterance verification'.

We received two very good bids for Interspeech 2015 organization, one from our German colleagues, for a conference in Dresden, and one from our Swedish colleagues, for a conference in Stockholm. It is very important to ISCA to have several high-quality proposals for the organization of Interspeech to guarantee the continuity of Interspeech events with, at least, the same level of quality. The International Advisory Comittee is now in the process of evaluating the bids and a decision will be made based on this evaluation. We are working on our new concept of 'ISCA training schools', announced during the last ISCA General Assembly, and we will soon open a call for proposals.
Of course, we are also working on all the other aspects of ISCA activities, please look at the ISCA web site  and come to Portland, Interspeech 2012, to have a complete view!

Best,
JF Bonastre
ISCA President

2-2The ISCA Fellow Program: call for nominations.
In 2007, ISCA began its Fellow Program to recognize and honor outstanding
members who have made significant contributions to the field of speech
communication science and technology. To qualify for this distinction, a
candidate must have been an ISCA member for five years or more with a
minimum of ten years experience in the field. Nominations may be made by any
ISCA member (see Nomination Form). A Fellow may be recognized by their
outstanding technical contributions and/or continued significant service to
ISCA. The candidate's technical contribution should be summarized in the
nomination in terms of publications, patents, projects, prototypes and their
impact in the community. A nomination should be supported by at least 3
references from ISCA Fellows/Board members.

Fellows will be selected by a Fellow Selection Committee of nine members
who each serve three-year terms. Members of the Committee will be chosen
from ISCA Fellows by the ISCA Board. Fellow Selection Committee members
will avoid writing references for fellow candidates.

The total number selected in any one year will not exceed one-third percent
of the total ISCA membership in that year.

New ISCA Fellows will be announced each year at INTERSPEECH.

Nominations should be sent to: 'fellows_nomination [at] isca-speech.org' by
February 10. Those who plan to nominate are strongly advised to write brief
information on candidates (candidate's name and affiliation) to the above
address before January 10 with your name and contacting e-mail address.
Re-send your e-mail when you do not receive an acknowledgement in a week.

2-3Call for nominations of ISCA distinguished lecturers.

The deadline for nominations for ISCA Distinguished Lecturers for the coming term is
January 15.
The process is very easy, requiring only 15mn work on your part to send in the name of
someone you think would be very good at this task, with a pointer to their website/cv, and a few
sentences on why you think they should be selected to give lectures (e.g., you've heard them give great
presentations, their field is one that needs more exposure in the field, etc.). please send this
information in email to dl_nominations@isca-speech.org .

The process is described at

http://www.isca-speech.org/iscaweb/index.phpoption=com_content&view=article&id=62&Itemid=75

Please take a few minutes to nominate the person you think would make a great DL and support a
very worthy outreach effort.

Thanks!
Julia Hirschberg
